🆕 Aged Domain Picks (for Content Sites)

Welcome to a new Monday email featuring the top aged domain picks over the last week, to build content sites out on

Welcome to a new Monday email that showcases my pick of the top new aged domains, to build content sites out on (or redirect). If you’ve not yet subscribed, here’s the CTA for you:

I haven’t showcased an aged domain since September of 2020 for the Website Investing paying subscribers - I can’t believe it’s been over 2 years. Yes, this timescale plots exactly with crypto’s rise which took my attention completely away from this space. By the way, the investing.io newsletter is now back every Thursday, here is last week’s:

What are Aged Domains?

Back in 2020, I wrote a 5 part series on Website Investing for Flippa which included the post How to Generate ROI from Building Out On An Aged Domain. In it, Alex, the founder of odys, as well as Adam from Niche Website Builders, define what aged domains are and how to generate ROI from them.

I’ve personally both built content sites on aged domains and 301 redirected them (after indexing content and letting it sit for a whole) to existing sites to power them up.

The TLDR is that when they work, aged domains can save you years of link-building work and enable to you rank so much faster than on brand-new domains.

Right, onto this week’s domains…

I say domains, but I went so deep on just one domain that I’ve reached the email limit on Substack, but I hope you get value out of this analysis, I enjoyed doing it again.

KetoDash.com

ODYS Price: $3,610

Domain Age: 5 years

Niche: Fitness / Health

Wayback History

The most recent entry of the site in its former glory is May 2018, but note that back in November 2018 it was being redirected to ketobootstrap.com, and then back in August 2021 the domain changed to a spanish based nutrition site before finally dropping.

Referring Domain Analysis

Whilst this site does have great links from businessinsider.com and insider.com, I’d like to see more health & nutrition referring domains for topical relevance. Using Majestic, the domain’s trust flow is only 9 (citation flow of 16).

Also, it’s super interesting to see that the most powerful link (according to Semrush) is actually from the SEO Consultant Marie Haynes. She discusses how the site was badly hit by the "Medic" Core Update of August 1, 2018, which targeted YMYL sites. This is a screenshot from her post:

Will discuss this more at the end.

These would be the first pages you consider recreating:

ODYS Monetization Angle

Use this domain to build out an authority website focused on all things Keto diet. Fill it with articles, reviews, how-to guides, and other content formats on weight loss exercises, charts, supplements, special diets, etc. Monetized via affiliate marketing and display ads.

My Thoughts / What I’d Do

First up, I think this is a great brandable 2-word .com domain to build a health site out on, and FWIW (not much) Godaddy values it at $1,443.

I’ve personally been on the slow-carb diet and don’t think I ever truly got into ketosis, but over 2 million people a month are interested in achieving this and damn are the head terms competitive:

The typical advice is to find a sub-niche within keto, establish topical relevance, and benefit from this existing link profile.

However, as we know, this site got badly hit by the YMYL google update, but Marie Haynes sets out why she thinks this was the case, and if you set it up to win this time then maybe you can get Google’s favor:

On the last point she states:

If you are selling a health related product that has either a negative reputation, or has no obvious scientific backing, you may find that Google’s algorithms trust you less.

So what I’d do is build a lot of EAT, stay away from physical product affiliate offers and monetize with ads using Ezoic, covering non-contentious informational content using a seed KW such as “keto diet snacks” (which does still have a tough difficulty of 60), and targeting all of the lower competition phrases/questions:

That way you’ll have a defensible site that you may be able to take back to some kind of former glory.

Ok that’s it from me for this week on aged domains, I’ll be back in your inbox tomorrow with my pick of the latest content sites on Flippa.

Until then, come follow me on twitter or book a micro-consulting call with me.

Cheers!

Richard
