NEWSLETTER SELLING TIP

Timing your sale matters more than you realize.

Buyers aren't necessarily purchasing what your newsletter is today, but the direction it's heading.

When growth is steady, engagement is strong, and revenue is trending up, the story sells itself. When your numbers flatten or quality slips because you've lost interest, buyers start pricing in risk and future work.

The best moment to sell is often when you feel like things are finally clicking. A rise in quarterly results, an ongoing sponsorship deal, or a noticeable jump in subscribers gives buyers confidence that the momentum will continue after the handoff.

Momentum signals potential, and potential can command a premium price from the right buyer.

NEWSLETTER ACQUISITION TIP

Assess audience and reader quality

A newsletter’s value is driven by its audience. You’re not just buying a list of email addresses, so here’s what to look at:

1. Subscriber sources

Ask how subscribers were acquired. A list grown organically through content and referrals is more valuable than one built through co-branded giveaways or paid ads. Paid growth isn’t bad, but you need to know how much was spent to get those readers and how engaged they are.

2. Engagement metrics

Look beyond total subscribers and ask for:

  • Average open and click rates over the past six months

  • Growth or decline in engagement over time

  • Churn and unsubscribe rates

  • Reply rates or reader feedback

If engagement is falling, find out why. A 50,000-subscriber newsletter with 20% opens and a 1% CTR is far less valuable than one with 15,000 engaged readers who consistently click and buy.

3. Audience overlap

If the seller runs multiple newsletters or brands, check for list overlap. You might not be getting unique readers, which affects both reach and revenue potential.

4. List hygiene

Ask when the list was last cleaned of inactive addresses. The audience may be smaller than it appears.

NEWSLETTER MONETIZATION TIP

A preferred supplier list

Several of the niche newsletters I read have set up specialist job boards, but they're a lot of work to maintain.

Here's a quicker, easier way to connect people and get paid:

Put together a small, curated list of trusted suppliers for your niche audience. Set up a page on your website (or a Google Doc or Notion page) that highlights their expertise and offers.

You handpick 20 to 30 service providers you have used and/or would recommend. Small (and large) businesses always need a steady stream of leads—and they will pay for them.

Charge these suppliers a modest monthly fee to be included, say $30 to $75. This feels reasonable and ongoing for service providers—unlike a one-off ad buy.

For you, the math adds up quickly. Ten vendors at $50 a month is $500 in predictable revenue.

It's easier to sell than sponsorships, more useful for readers, and far more aligned with how newsletters create value.

Will you try this?

Until next week, keep building. 💪
